🏥 The information in this article is not a substitute for professional help.

There are about 4 cups in a pound of (dry) dog food.

The amount of cups in a pound is based on the food volume, not the weight. For that reason, the exact amount is likely a bit different for each brand of kibble.

Some dry dog food brands like “Royal Canin” seem to have about 5 cups in a pound, and others seem to have about 3 - which averages to about 4 cups.

To get the exact answer for your specific dog food brand, you’ll have to measure out the dog food yourself, using your own cup. Put a bowl on a scale and start counting the number of dog food cups until you hit the 1-pound mark on the scale.

Number of Cups in Different Dog Food Bag Sizes

Please note that these are approximate numbers as each brand of kibble will be slightly different in volume.

  • 1 lbs bag: ~4 cups
  • 5 lbs bag: ~20 cups
  • 8 lbs bag: ~32 cups
  • 10 lbs bag: ~40 cups
  • 15 lbs bag: ~60 cups
  • 24 lbs bag: ~96 cups
  • 28 lbs bag: ~112 cups
  • 30 lbs bag: ~120 cups
  • 35 lbs bag: ~140 cups
  • 40 lbs bag: ~160 cups
  • 50 lbs bag: ~200 cups

Number of Cups of Dog Food You Need to Feed Your Dog per Day

Check the guide printed physically on the bag to know how many cups of dog food you need to feed your dog per day. It will usually contain a simple table you can follow based on your dog’s breed, weight, or age.

Once you determine the number of cups your dog needs per day (based on the bag’s guide), divide it throughout the day:

  • A healthy adult dog usually needs to be fed 2 times a day.
  • Puppies under 12 weeks of age need to be fed about 4 times a day.
  • Puppies that are 3-6 months of age need to be fed about 3 times a day.
